There are SO many benefits to making recognition and appreciation a priority at home, at work, in the classroom, and at your school. Showing appreciation creates a more positive environment, keeps people coming back, and serves as an amazing recruitment and publicity tool. It is one of my quick tips for Service Project Coordinators.

A couple of years ago I read the book, 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace, and it transformed how I thought about appreciation. Pretty much it says that each person feels appreciated in different ways and the key for it to be effective is to find the way that “speaks” to them.
In the post below, I will give some tips of how I apply what I learned in the book to recognizing TEACHING STAFF.

Show Appreciation to Teaching Staff: Words of Affirmation
Words of Affirmation are important. This is a way to give praise to your teaching staff and recognize them for the time and energy they put into their jobs.
- Words of affirmation can be verbal or written
- Words of affirmation can praise their accomplishments, contributions, character, or personality
- Words of affirmation can be public or given one-on-one
- Words of affirmation need to be genuine
Show Appreciation to Teaching Staff: Quality Time
A person that feels appreciation best through Quality Time loves that extra personal time and attention you are able to give him or her.
- Quality time can happen by inviting teachers to lunch and listening.
- Quality time can happen before or after school during focus groups.
- Quality time can take place socially off campus allowing teachers to get to know each other better.
“When relationships are not nurtured by a sense of appreciation, the results are predictable:
• Team members will experience a lack of connectedness with others and with the mission of the organization.
• Workers will tend to become discouraged, feeling “There is always more to do and no one appreciates what I’m doing.”
• Often employees will begin to complain about their work, their colleagues, and their supervisor.
• Eventually, team members start to think seriously about leaving the organization and they begin to search for other employment.”Gary Chapman
Show Appreciation to Teaching Staff: Tangible Gifts
Tangible gifts are very popular ways to show appreciation. It doesn’t have to cost a lot to mean a lot.
- Tangible gifts can be personal based on likes and interests.
- Tangible gifts can be theme-based so extra thought it put it.
- Tangible gifts can make your teaching staff more productive by helping them with their job.
Show Appreciation to Teaching Staff: Acts of Service
For your teaching staff that feel appreciated through Acts of Service you can support them by providing assistance in a way that is meaningful to them.
- Acts of service can happen after hours by helping with a special project.
- Acts of service can happen by doing a menial task so your staff can work on a higher priority.
- Acts of service can happen by providing food or drinks during a long meeting or project.
Show Appreciation to Teaching Staff: Physical Touch
This way to show appreciation is one of the hardest in a work place setting but can still be utilized and be done appropriately.
- Show appreciation with a firm handshake.
- Show appreciation with a high five.
- Show appreciation with a pat on the back.
“Recognition is largely about behavior. “Catch them doing what you want and recognize it,” the books say. Appreciation, conversely, focuses on performance plus the employee’s value as a person. Recognition is about improving performance and focuses on what is good for the company. Appreciation emphasizes what is good for the company and good for the person (which may sometimes mean helping them find a position that is better for them than their current role). The relational direction of recognition is top-down, coming from leadership.”Gary Chapman
